Firefighters practice water rescues

Fresno firefighters took to The Island Water Park on Friday to practice rescue techniques.

They know the hot weather will lead to more rescue calls, but firefighters also need to protect themselves while trying to save lives.

Stressed out and thrashing around the water.  That's how many firefighters find victims who need help.

“You get in that panic mode and they're not really thinking straight, so a lot of times the victim can be a liability in addition to the water around us,” said Captain Brian Price.

Rescuers have to be defensive, sometimes fighting off a victim, before saving them.  After a quick lesson and getting geared up, CBS47’s Rachel Azevedo gives rescuing a try.

When the victim is flailing, she pushes back, and eventually gets behind the victim.  A rope attached to her life vest will pull them to the side when she taps her helmet.  It's exhausting work, and firefighters know when the weather heats up, they'll get the call.

“Just looking back at history, it happens several times a year that people lose their lives in bodies of water around town,” said Firefighter, John Pepper.

Thousands will enjoy Valley water parks this weekend.

“I think it's safer than going to the river or something, you know, because you've got so many people here, like lifeguards,” said David Toes, a patron at The Island.

Just beyond the perimeter, canals tempt folks who need to cool off.  Firefighters warn of the dangers lurking in canal waters.

“They're disgusting.  There's a ton of debris and you can't even see through the water.  There’re numerous shopping carts to tires,” said Pepper.
