Fresno fire investigators are trying to determine the cause of a fire that resulted in an explosion and two residents suffering burns.

It happened around 7:00 p.m. Wednesday night at the Kings Court apartment complex on 6th Street at Barstow Avenue.

Ryan Lopez talked to CBS47 from the scene. His wife shot a video and gave it to CBS47. "We where just sitting there visiting and all of a sudden we heard an explosion and look outside and there's smoke everywhere," said Lopez.

The explosion Lopez heard may have come from an unexpected source inside an apartment. "People inside say they where using a propane torch to heat something. The cause is obviously under investigation," said Koby Johns with the Fresno Fire Department.

Dawn Langer lives next store and heard the screams and got out fast. "I just unplugged everything and grabbed my cat and came down here," said Langer.

The person believed to have started the blaze is one of those injured. "He has first and second degree burns on about 50% of his body. He's at Community Regional Medical Center at this time," said Johns.

A second person was treated for smoke inhalation.

The speed of the fire took many by surprise. "People started to panic and we come out here and it just starts getting worse within seconds. I mean... all of a sudden you see flames coming out the door out of the back window.

"This fire could have gotten have gotten very big, very fast. Very dense populated area," said Johns.

The apartment complex has 36 units. Three units sustained serious damage and several others had smoke and water damage.

The cause is still under investigation.
