An investigation is underway after a Fresno County deputy shot a man accused of trying to force two women into a vehicle.

It happened around 11:00 a.m. Monday near Nebraska and DeWolf. Deputies say a woman called 911 and reported an armed man on her property. The sheriff's department says deputies saw a man with a shotgun who was apparently trying to force two females into a vehicle.

Deputies say they ordered the man put down the weapon but he aimed it at the officers.

"We are conditioned to respond accordingly anytime someone points a gun at you," said Chris Curtice from the Fresno County Sheriff's Department.

The man was shot once in his torso and was taken to Community Regional Medical Center where he underwent surgery.

It's still unclear why the man was at the home or if he or the two women knew anyone living there

Investigators say a group of gang members fired at an off-duty officer who was riding in his personal car.  It happened in southeast Fresno around 8:30 Monday evening at the intersection of cedar and butler.

Police say the officer was driving to the nearby southeast district substation to begin his shift when four people in a car pulled up next to him at a traffic light and began staring him down.  They reportedly shouted out, “What gang do you belong to?”
The officer ignored them, but then the suspects allegedly pulled out a gun and fired multiple rounds at his car.  The officer had his gun on him and returned fire through the back window of his car.  He then drove to the substation and alerted his fellow officers who set out looking for the suspects.

Police Chief Jerry Dyer says the community is lucky to not have a dead police officer.  Dyer says his training and quick reaction time is what saved his life.

“That officer did an incredible job tonight.  When you consider the fact that there were multiple suspects in that vehicle.  They were behind him, he was fired upon and made decision to return fire and struck three suspects.  I tell you what, he’s a hero,” said Fresno Police Chief Jerry Dyer.

The veteran officer managed to hit three of the suspects.  Two of the men were later dropped off at the hospital and a third man was found with a gunshot wound at a gas station in the city of Fowler.  He too was taken to the hospital.  All are believed to be bulldog gang members.

Police have detained a fourth person.  A woman whom they believe was also in the car.  They need a little more information before they can formally charge her.

The Bulldogs and their fans have overcome black Friday when the Dog's fell to San Jose State and they've decided to wear those smart black uniforms for the huge game Saturday night.

"I'm thinking its gonna be pretty close to a sellout, if not a sellout. Still got a pretty good team and a good chance to win the Mountain West Championship," said fan Louie Ruiz.

By midday Monday the stadium was more than half sold out.

Sellout? I'm hoping it will, I think chances are good. I know it's on national TV and it's gonna be cold, but I hope everybody comes out to support the Dogs because they deserve it," said fan Ron Boloise.

Said another fan, Jeanne Faleck, "it's more fun being at a game in person and it's gonna be a little chilly so it's gonna be like a real fall football game. And we don't get that experience very often and I'm from the Midwest and I love having that."

A man was arrested after leading sheriff's deputies on a high speed chase through central Fresno on Tuesday.

Arrested was 53 year old Larry Burgin. Officials say deputies attempted to make a traffic stop involving Burgin around 4:30 a.m. at Blackstone and Bullard but he failed to stop and fled from the scene.

The pursuit apparently took place for several minutes with Burgin driving erratically at speeds up to 70 miles per hour. Burgin eventually abandoned his pickup in the area of Hoover High School and ran away on foot. He was later discovered hiding in the bushes of a residence nearby and was taken into custody without incident.

During an investigation, deputies discovered marijuana packaged for sale and evidence of identity theft inside the abandoned truck.

Burgin was arrested on charges of felony evading, felony narcotics possession, and identity theft.

Gang Members Shoot at Off-duty Officer

Two Fresno men are facing attempted murder charges after shooting at an off-duty officer Monday night, said Fresno Police Chief Jerry Dyer.

During a press conference at Fresno Police Headquarters Tuesday, Dyer identified Mario Rangel, 22, and Ricky Burciaga, 23, as the two men involved. Dyer said both are documented Bulldog gang members.

Monday after 8 p.m., the officer was driving to work down Cedar Ave. when he noticed two men following him. The passenger, Burciaga, began throwing up gang signs and shouted at the officer, asking what gang he was a part of, Dyer said.

When they pulled up to the traffic light at the intersection of Cedar and Butler Avenues, the officer was in the left lane, and the suspects were behind the officer in the lane to the right of him, at a diagonal.

The officer felt threatened and reached into his duty bag that was on the passenger seat and held onto his gun.

That's when Burciaga opened fire, and the officer returned fire, Dyer said.

"That vehicle [the officer's vehicle] was struck five times on the passenger side. Two of those rounds struck just below the handle of the door. A couple of inches higher, there's no doubt that those rounds would've struck our officer and perhaps killed him," Dyer said.

The officer had been on the phone with his wife and had given her the suspects' license plate number while they followed him.

"The officer's wife was on the phone the entire time with him and heard this entire incident from the people yelling at her husband, to the exchange of gunfire that occurred," Dyer said.

One woman, who lives nearby the site of the shooting, said she heard about seven or eight rounds.

"I just dropped to the floor because they were so close to me that I just dropped to the floor. And I just grabbed the-- I have a baby. So I just grabbed him and dropped to the floor," said the woman, who did not want to be identified for safety reasons. She said many of the people who live around her are gang members.

The two men were struck by the officer's gunfire.

After the attack, witnesses told police that they saw the driver, Rangel, get out of the vehicle and fire at the officer's car as he drove through the intersection, Dyer said. The officer drove to the substation that was only one block south from the shooting site.

Burciaga was later driven to the hospital by other men. Rangel was taken after his aunt called for help for her nephew because he was having "stomach problems." When emergency personnel examined him, a bullet fell from his clothes. Police were later able to connect him to the shooting, Dyer said.

Police are looking for a silver 1997 Honda Civic with license plates 6JMH848 that they believe was involved in the shooting.

Shots Fired at Madera Deputy

Two Madera men are behind bars, accused of firing forty rounds at a Madera Sheriff's deputy.

This is the third officer involved shooting in the valley in 24 hours.

The shooting happened around four Tuesday morning.

The deputy was trying to stop a truck near Fairmead Boulevard and Avenue 22.

The suspects sped off and shot at the deputy.

"And on four different occasions through the probably two or three mile chase they fired on four different occasions," Madera Sheriff John Anderson said of the suspects.

Anderson says the shots were fired from the back window of the truck. Some of the gunfire ricocheted off a cover on the bed of the pickup. Investigators believe at least forty rounds were fired.

"The interior of the truck was just littered with shell casings, of two different calibers that I could see just glancing in there," Anderson said.

The truck turned into an orchard and crashed into a tree. The two men inside ran off.

The deputy wasn't injured.

Within hours, detectives tracked the suspects, 24-year-old Abel Ramos and 27-year-old Mario Valdez to the Days Inn on Highway 99 and Avenue 16. Both men have extensive criminal histories.

The violent encounter follows two officer involved shootings Monday. One in Selma left a suspect wounded after he pointed a shotgun at a Fresno Sheriff's deputy.

And Monday night, known gang members fired at the personal car of an off-duty Fresno police officer, mistaking him for another gang member. The officer returned fire injuring two of the suspects.

"That vehicle was struck five times on the passenger side. Two of those rounds struck just below the handle of the door. A couple of inches higher, there's no doubt that those rounds would've struck our officer and perhaps killed him," said Fresno Police Chief Jerry Dyer.
