Lose Your License For Texting & Driving?

Should you temporarily lose your license for texting while driving?  It's a topic now being discussed across the country.  According to a survey performed by "Poll Position," 50% of Americans say yes.  Meanwhile, 38% say no and 12% were undecided.

You don't have to look hard on the road these days to see someone texting.  Cell phones are a contributing factor in nearly a third of all traffic crashes.  Paramedics with American Ambulance see it almost everyday.  The reason is simple.

Obviously when you're texting you're not paying attention.  You're not looking at the windshield, you're looking down at your phone and you're chewing up that distance and your reaction time is cut in half," said Keith Gibbins of American Ambulance.

It's become such a huge problem, Americans are now being asked, "should the punishment be stricter than a fine and include a temporary license suspension?"  We posed that question to some drivers in Fresno.

"I think maybe a 30-day suspension would work, said Chris Jennock.

Chris Jennock, an insurance agent, elaborates on his reasoning.

"It’s actually worse than drunk driving.  Statistics show that," said Jennock.

19-year old Ellen Kyurinyan isn't quite sold on the idea.

"I don't think it will stop anyone long term from texting because everyone texts.  Old people, young people.  They'll just try to hide it more," said Ellen Kyurinyan.

"I don't know about losing your license," said Kelly Blocker.

Gibbins says to avoid trouble and tragedy altogether, follow this advice.

"Just pay attention.  Text when you're at home.  It can wait," said Gibbins.
