Union Fighting Fresno County Over Pay Cuts

A public employee union is trying for a preliminary injunction against Fresno County over a proposed pay cut.

The Service Employees International Union (SEIU) wants to stop a plan for a 9% pay cut for union members.

Earlier this month, the Fresno County Board of Supervisors approved a plan to make the necessary cuts to help balance the county budget.

Supervisor Henry Perea voted against the cuts, saying he sides with the union. “…and we could have probably taken a lot less of a cut than the 9% we imposed. Speaking as one supervisor, I tend to agree with them. I think the county was a little heavy handed in how we approached negotiations.”

The board has to make of millions of dollars in cuts, partly because of less revenue from taxes and higher costs for union worker pensions.
