A State Supreme Court decision will eliminate redevelopment money from local communities.
The move frees up $1.7 billion to help balance California's budget.
The ruling is in favor Governor Jerry Brown’s legislation that eliminates 400 local redevelopment agencies throughout the state.
Local governments will still receive funds through property taxes but city leaders will have to be more disciplined in their spending in order to get all projects done.
The City of Fresno says it will stay committed to revitalizing downtown.
Craig Scharton, Director of Downtown Revitalization said, “We're resourceful so we always adjust and we're committed so we just keep moving forward.”
The state plans to use most of the money it's regaining to fund K-12 education and the rest will go to struggling cities and counties for things like police and fire protection.
