“I think it would be appropriate to put somebody else at least temporarily in the position as the leader of the board as president instead of Dr. Vang,” Powell said in an exclusive interview with CBS 47.
Superintendent Powell is calling for an investigation into Tony Vang's residency.
Vang is President of the Fresno Unified School Board.
He's accused of living outside the district while only renting a home there.
“The rule is very simple you have to live in the district you represent or you automatically have vacated the office,” Powell said.
But Vang remained defiant at Wednesday’s board meeting.
Some say Vang called for a moment of silence for a deceased teacher to silence the opposition.
Sommer Gaston said he used her uncle's name to shut [Trustee} Michelle Asadoorian down.
“I don't appreciate that,” Gaston said.
Asadoorian stormed out with fellow Trustee Larry Moore.
They’re asking for outside agencies to sort this one out.
The meeting unraveled.
The president of the Fresno Teachers Association was removed by police.
“I would come talk to you at your house but don't know which to go to,” he told Vang.
Asadoorian said she was upset because there were two large items on the agenda.
“One is the graduation task force recommendation and the other is the budget,” she said.
Larry Moore said, “I’m concerned about the disrespect they're showing for the community.”
The local Hmong community supports Vang.
“What we are here for is to look for the truth and I believe the truth will come out,” said Nouta Vang.
“When we get into these silly adult arguments then the business that we're in to help kids succeed gets side-tracked so an independent investigation can take care of that very quickly,” said Powell.
