Two suspects are behind bars after allegedly shooting at a Fresno County sheriff's deputy.  It happened during a car chase that started near First and Princeston around 5:30 in the morning.  It ended at Cedar and Ashlan when the suspect ran into a fence.

The red Honda, hung up on a fence, is the result of a chaotic chase involving suspects and a deputy exchanging gun fire.

"I woke up to shooting.  They were running all through here and then they were driving over the center divider and they were shooting," said Misty Russell, who lives in apartments near the crash site.

Residents in nearby apartments say they had a rude awakening.

"I heard the sirens so I looked out and cops driving by said 'get back in the house, get back in the house,'" said Roy Azevedo, a witness.

It all started several miles away when a deputy tried to pull over the driver of a stolen car.  Instead, the driver and his passenger opened fire while driving away.

"We do know there were multiple rounds fired so there were at least two handguns used," said Captain Al Maroney of the Fresno Police Department, which is investigating since the shooting happened in Fresno city limits.

After the crash the driver was immediately arrested, but the passenger ran.  A deputy fired at him and missed, but the suspect was caught and arrested nearby.

Fresno County Sheriff Margaret Mims says this is an example of the dangers of the job.

"I'm glad nobody was hurt, I'm glad the deputy is alright.  The suspects will be arrested and booked into the county jail and will have their day in court," said Mims.

Police have not released the names of the suspects.  It's unknown whether officers have recovered the suspects' guns.
