CHP Officer Shot In South Valley

A CHP officer was shot while monitoring highway traffic just north of Bakersfield.
It happened on highway 178 Sunday night.
An SUV reportedly passed the officer, and someone inside opened fire, hitting the officer
in the hand and chest.
Fortunately the officer was wearing a vest that stopped the bullet.
The injured officer managed to return fire, hitting the rear window of the SUV.
The officer is recovering from non-life threatening injuries, the suspect is still on the loose.
