A documentary crew for French public television has spent the last week with Fresno police officers.

“My opinion is that we have to learn a lot from you guys in terms with the way you deal with certain things and violence and everything,” Anne Verdaguer.

Verdaguer is the director of the documentary.

She says France has terrorism and violence, but it's different than what we deal with.

“We don't have violent crime and we don't have gangs because we don't have guns so we're very interested in knowing how it works,” Verdaguer said.

This is the French crew's second trip to Fresno.

They were here four years ago to focus on the methamphetamine problem in the valley.

They came back to see if anything had changed. And it has.

“I'm struck with the violence I think it's much more violent than it was four years ago,” Verdaguer said.

The department has formed special teams to deal with auto theft and gang violence.

“We've been able to share with them our successes in spite of some of the challenges that we have,” said Fresno Police Chief Jerry Dyer.

Fresno, like other cities, has made cuts to its police department. And budget cuts in the county have lead to early releases at the jail.

The French crew says they were impressed with how the department handled the challenges.

“They're very courageous too because the budget cuts mean the people they arrest won't stay in jail for a long time so they just go out and do other stuff,” Verdaguer said.
