Getting adults educated and working is the goal of a new initiative called Learn2Earn.

On Monday, Fresno Mayor Ashley Swearengin announced the program to help people get a GED, vocational training and other skills.

There are a lot of tools in the new program and one of the most important is the new 211 telephone hotline, that gives adults basic information on how to go back to school.

In Fresno, there are thousands of people who for a variety of reasons, lack the education to get a good job, but Mayor Swearengin hopes to change that through Learn2Earn.

Mayor Swearengin said, "It's hard to find a job anyway in this economy but if you don't have a basic education or basic vocational training, it's even harder."

27.4% of Fresno residents don't have a high school diploma, which is 75% higher than national average. On top of that, there is also double digit unemployment.

Brenda Dann-Messier, assistant secretary for the Office of Vocational and Adult Education with the U.S. Dept. of Education says there is hope. “Keep on going to school. Finish what you started here. Go on to college.”

Learn2Earn provides low or no cost education and programs to help people get a GED, vocational training or learn the English language.

For more information, call 211 or visit the Learn2Earn website.
