One man is dead and another injured after a shooting in this Southwest Fresno neighborhood.

Around midnight on Sunday officers responded to Hawes and Arthur for reports of "shots fired". When they arrived they found a 28-year-old male victim with gunshot wounds to his head and upper torso lying in the driver seat of a Chevrolet Avalanche.

Police then received information that another 20-year-old male victim was also in the Chevrolet Avalanche when the shooting occurred and was on his way to CRMC with gunshot wounds to his lower extremities. An unknown 21-year-old male was driving that second victim in a Ford Mustang. An officer standing by the entrance of CRMC observed the Mustang drop off the shooting victim and then immediately leave the hospital at a high rate of speed. The officer gave chase to the Mustang and eventually took the driver into custody after a brief pursuit. The driver of the Mustang claims he is an associate of the victims and witnessed the shooting.

The 28-year-old shooting victim has been identified as Jason Rooters who died shortly after arriving at CRMC. The other 20-year-old victim shot multiple times in the lower extremities will survive his wounds.

The preliminary information on this shooting is that both victims were in the Chevrolet when the suspect approached the passenger side of the vehicle and started shooting at the victims multiple times striking both victims. After the shooting, the suspect fled the scene northbound on Arthur from Hawes. The only description provided of the suspect is that he was an African-American male, large in stature, wearing dark trousers and a dark-colored hoodie.

Currently, the investigation is only in the initial stages and it is undetermined if the shooting is gang-involved or gang-related.

If anyone has information regarding the identity and/or whereabouts of the shooter they are urged to call Crime Stoppers at (559) 498-STOP.
