A long-time Madera County teacher is making a very personal and controversial change. Next month, Yosemite High teacher Gary Sconce will be officially known as Ms. Karen Scot. The former sheriff's deputy is going through gender transformation after years of struggling with her identity. The transformation is a first within the Yosemite Unified School District, and officials say they are working to make it as smooth as possible for everyone.
56 year old Yosemite High school teacher Gary Sconce is taking on a new identity; embracing his true self as a woman. On April 22nd, the 24-year veteran science and multi-media teacher will be known as Ms. Karen Scot.
In a statement Wednesday, Ms. Scot spoke out about what she calls a long overdue change.
"Finally being myself has brought me great comfort. I will continue to teach my heart out like I have for thirty years, and will endeavor to be the best science teacher I can," says Scot.
The transformation has generated mixed emotions.
Yosemite High senior Ryan Smith has two classes with sconce and says the courage to come out is admirable.
Smith says, "If that's what he wants to do and that's what makes him happy, than he has the right to do that."
For other students, it's a lot to take in.
Yosemite High junior William Godwin says, "I've known him as a man and now he's trying to say he's a woman and he's had all these feelings, so I don't know. It's hard to deal with that."
School officials say letters have been sent out to parents district wide and counselors will be on hand for students to address any questions that may come up.
Under Calfornia Education Code, no one can be discriminated against due to gender or sexual orientation, and district officials say Sconce will be no exception.
Assistant Superintendent Jim Monreal says, "He's been recognized for his distinguished academic achievement in the classroom. The goal is to continue that piece with the students."
