The Clovis Unified School Board has formally dismissed 2nd grade teacher Neng Yang, 44, of his duties with the district.

Yang is accused of molesting a young girl several times inside his classroom at Freedom Elementary School. He was arrested in late January and has plead not guilty to dozens of local and federal charges.

"We will not let the actions of a single individual define Clovis Unified," said Board President Pete Van Volkinburg after announcing the board's unanimous vote.

"The board certainly and our administration want our actions to show the community just how seriously we take this," said district spokeswoman Kelly Avants.

Yang has been on unpaid leave since shortly after his arrest, Avants said.

Board members say Yang did not ask for a hearing within the legal 30-day window that would have allowed him an opportunity to fight for his job.

According to documents obtained by CBS47, Yang allegedly molested a 7-year-old girl several times inside his classroom and recorded some of the sexual acts on his cell phone. Investigators also found dozens of pornographic images on his work-issued computer, they said.

"The sad thing is we in society don't want to admit that this is occurring," said Clovis Police Sgt. Matt McFadden.

McFadden, who helped investigate the Yang case, says the public would be stunned by the type of evidence he and his colleagues see when investigating alleged child pornography cases. He could talk about specific details in the Yang case.

McFadden says there are so many alleged child pornography cases that the Clovis Police Department is backlogged.

The Digital Age has given alleged perpetrators easy access to disturbing images and videos, he said. In many cases, those responsible are in positions of trust, he added.

McFadden hopes parents take time to talk to their kids about how real the problem is and how important it is to seek help if they're ever put in any danger.

"You need to prep them up for those uncomfortable situations. You know, what are you going to do if this happens? Or you need to have the talk about good touch bad touch," McFadden said.

Since Yang's arrest, all of his now-former students have been moved into a new classroom with a new teacher, Avants said.

Yang's wife is back at work as the principal of Miramonte Elementary School, Avants said.

Yang is scheduled to appear in court again in April.
