Paramedics raced down Shaw Ave around 5:30 Wednesday afternoon in a rush to University Inn.
Police say a woman staying there called the front desk and told them he man she was with shot her. Officers responded, but had a difficult time getting to her in an upstairs room.
“The door was latched from the inside so officers had to kick the door,” said Lt. Joe Gomez of the Fresno Police Dept.
Once inside, police noticed the 40-year old woman had a gunshot wound to her chest.
“She was conscious and breathing, which is a good sign,” said Lt. Gomez.
Doctors have since stabilized her and she’s now recovering in the hospital.
However, the 55-year old man in the room with her was not in good shape. Police say he died after shooting himself in the chest. The details of what lead to this violent outburst are limited.
“It was a lovers’ quarrel. Romance was involved. We’re not sure what it was about," said Lt. Gomez.
We spoke with a man who traveled in from Sacramento on business.
“Not looking forward to the night,” said Ruben Garduno, a motel guest.
After experiencing such a rude welcoming, Garduno can’t help but think of the what ifs.
“You know, bullet goes through the roof and hits one of us,” said Garduno.
Garduno booked three nights at this motel, but says his stay is now getting cut short.
“Moving out tomorrow to another hotel. Somewhere better. Probably Clovis,” said Garduno.
