The flags are lowered at Fresno State to pay tribute to one of the university's very own.
CHP Officer Juan Gonzalez, 33, graduated in 2004 with a degree in criminology.
Monday, he and his colleague Officer Brian Law, 34, died while responding an accident scene on Highway 99 in Kingsburg.
"Devastated. We love our students at Fresno State. And we especially love the ones that stay connected to us and continue to come back and give of their time," says Luz Gonzalez, dean of the College of Social Science and adviser for NAK, the fraternity that Gonzalez belonged to.
Luz Gonzalez, who is not related to Officer Gonzalez, was also a mentor to him while he was a student.
She says Gonzalez was committed to his community, often volunteering and mentoring students.
Becoming a CHP officer came with some struggle, Gonzalez says, but his hard work paid off.
"When he put that uniform on, that was his dream come true. And he showed everyone that it only came about through dedication and hard work," Gonzalez says.
His dedication was something that students such as Richard Batalla knew well.
As a member of the Nu Alpha Kappa fraternity, Gonzalez mentored current students.
"He was one of the greatest guys. He would put himself out there, like if you needed help, and no matter what time, he would make time," Batalla says.
He says Gonzalez would talk to them about the dangers of drinking and driving, and would be a designated driver if ever they needed one--anything to keep those who were like his little brothers safe.
It's with heavy hearts that the Fresno State community mourns and remembers a fallen alumnus.
"You know they graduate, for instance, in 2004, and 10 years later you're burying them," Gonzalez says.
The Fresno CHP office is in the process of making memorial and funeral arrangements for Officers Gonzalez and Law.
