A north valley city has been named one of the most violent in the country.
Merced is ranked 88th out of 100 U.S. cities with the highest amount of violent crime. Authors looked at violent crimes like murder, rape, armed robbery and aggravated assault. The crime rate is based on the number of those crimes per 1000 people in the population. Merced had 29 homicides last year.
"I was sorry to see that Merced made it on that list. Its going to scare some people but its also going to raise awareness that we have some issues to overcome," said assistant city manager
The city is planning to add 4 new police officers to the force to focus on ongoing issues like gang violence.
Number one on the list is East St. Louis, Illinois. Other California cities include Oakland at number nine, Stockton ranks 19th, Compton is number 47 and Desert Hot Springs is 48.
Fresno was not on the list.
