Two families were forced from their homes when a fire destroyed part of an apartment complex on Saturday.
The fire started just before 2p.m. on Recreation near Hedges in southeast Fresno.
Investigators say a man was getting ready to make lunch. He set a pan of oil on the stove to heat up and walked away, when he came back the grease was on fire.
He knew not to use water to try and put the fire out.
"He attempted to put the fire out by using baking soda. Another tactic which can work is to cover up the pan with a cookie sheet or pan lid he didn't get a chance to do that. He did the right thing he backed out of the apartment and called 911," said Thomas Cope from the Fresno Fire Department.
One person was treated at the scene for minor injuries.
Six apartments were damaged by the fire.
Two of them suffered significant damage.
