Parents and children had a chance to explore and try new things at a health and resource fair in southeast Fresno on Saturday.

The Lopez family looks forward to events like this.

"I think it's pretty cool because a lot of us are pretty low in the economy and we don't have too much money so a lot of this stuff to bring the kids out here give them something to do like swim. It's a safe environment for them and it's a lot of fun," says Bernadette Lopez.

The city of Fresno and Fresno Unified School District partnered with non-profit organizations.

"The purpose of the event is to bring the community together and have a great time. But at the same time to have them take advantage of a lot of the resources that we have here," says Luis Chavez from the Fresno Unified School Board.

That included health screenings and nutritional counseling.

There were also a lot of things for kids to enjoy.

"It's a great event for the kids the swimming pool's open and we're giving away free food, in collaboration with other organizations in the city coming together to make this happen," says Manuel Hernandez from the City of Fresno parks department.

There were special presentations including a visit from Dianna the white tiger cub from Project Survival Cat Haven.

The Sciencemobile showed kids how science can be fun.

"They taught them how to make a car out of paint sticks and a water bottle and batteries and it teaches them they don't have to go out and buy things they can create them out of their own mind," says Lopez.

Everything at this event was free of charge.
