Fulton Mall Changes Loom

Carlos Partids owns the Parsley Garden Cafe on the Fulton Mall and like many is hungry for more traffic but he worries progress might leave his small cafe behind.

"I don't know what's doing to happen, I don't know if that's going to bring more customers or not it's really a risk, probably I'm not going to be here," said Partids.

His concern is that a downtown revitalization will mean rising rent costs, putting him and others out of business. But Fresno Mayor Ashley Swearengin says opening Fulton Mall to traffic will benefit everyone, especially business owners.

"Well if you go to any great city in
America that city has a great downtown that revolves around a main street and the Fulton Mall is the city of Fresno's main street," said Swearengin.

But councilman Lee Brand isn't so sure now is the time for another big project.

"When you commit your city manager, your department heads and a lot of city staff towards this endeavor it's going to detract from other duties the city could do," said Brand.

And Partids' hope is whatever the city does will allow him to stay in business, until then he admits it's out of his hands.
