Betsy the grizzly bear had to be euthanized Friday morning because of declining health.
Betsy came to the zoo as a youngster back in 1976 and quickly became very popular with guests and zoo staff.
She was the oldest living female brown bear in an AZA-accredited zoo.
The Fresno Chaffee Zoo issued a statement saying, "Betsy lived a good long life, and we're happy our guests were able to appreciate how amazing bears are through her living here."
As the zoo mourns the passing of Betsy, it's also getting ready for the new King Cobra Exhibit opening Saturday morning.
