Explosions could be heard as flames ripped through the Santa Clara Homeless encampment, trapping some animals inside. Investigators say arson is likely to blame and at least two animals were injured in the fire.
"They are getting some conflicting reports as to how the fire was started. It does appear as though it was intentionally started," said Lawrence French with Fresno Fire Department.
The fire comes on the heels of the City ofFresno 's announcement it will clean out the homeless encampments later this month. Resident Diane Sweeten was away paying storage when she arrived to find nearly everything she owned up in flames.
"There have been fires up here and even some up on the streets over by the railroad,” said Sweeten.
