Controversy brewing over Merced coffee shop

Double Shot Espresso has been open for a little over a week and is causing a stir, because located just across the street is Golden Valley High School.

"I wouldn't want my son going there and getting coffee and being distracted by these girls half naked when they should be properly dressed to serve the community," said concerned parent, Brenda Leija.

From the outside Double Shot Espresso looks like any ordinary coffee shop.  It's what's on the inside that's raising eyebrows as it percolates in the community.

"We wear outfits, we wear out lingerie, we wear our bathing suit just to get more attention for people to come in," said Double Shot Employee, Felicia Ogara.

High school administrators at Orange Valley say it's causing a buzz on campus, but for all the wrong reasons.

"It's definitely something that will be a distraction for our campus and not something that we endorse at all," said Orange Valley High School Principal, Constantino Aguilar.

The manager of the shop said what the employees wear is nothing that wouldn't be seen outdoors on any ordinary summer day.

"The girls are in clothes that you would normally see at the city pool, when you go to the beach, people are in bikinis, short shorts," said Double Shot Espresso Manager, Patricia Quinonez.

The shop says they hope to appeal to more than just men, which is why they've added a variety of choices, like smoothies and energy drinks. But with the start of school just around the corner, they're also attracting heat from parents as well.

"I anticipate the parents voicing a lot of concern to our city council," said Aguilar.

They believe it's something that would be better suited across town, away from the school.

"It's going to be the wrong attraction of people getting coffee for different reasons.  It's not all going to be about coffee," said Leija.

As for the shop, they welcome the publicity.

"Whether or not people are saying good or bad, as long as they're talking about you, you're doing something right," said Quinonez.
