61 animals were seized from a property in Squaw Valley.
The animals were kept on the Squaw Valley property amid piles of trash, empty food bags, and cages.
Animal control officers found dogs, cats, birds, and a pot-bellied pig, and say all of them were horribly sick, kept in small cages, and left without food.
The Central California SPCA got a call from friends in Monterey. "They had some concerns about a 501(c)3," said Beth Caffrey with the Central California SPCA.
The non-profit was the Saint Francis All Creatures Rescue and Sanctuary. When they visited their office on the coast, they found animals suffering. "That 501(c)3 had a Squaw Valley address, so our humane officers out to actually investigate that property," said Caffrey.
The officers found the animals living in deplorable conditions. "We also found sores on a lot of the animals, a lot of missing hair, so they've got a lot of injuries on top of the fact they were starving," said Caffrey.
The animals can't be adopted yet because they are part of an investigation, but adopting other animals from the SPCA will help by making more room for them.
The SPCA is looking into the possibility of more animals from this group.
No arrests have been made but the investigation is ongoing.
