Fresno Mayor Ashley Swearengin visited CBS47 to talk about why Measure G is necessary.

If approved, Measure G will allow the City of Fresno to move forward with privatizing residential trash service.

Mayor Swearengin says she supports Measure G because it will keep costs low for the residents of Fresno because the rates are capped contractually. She also says public safety will not take further hits if it's passed, whereas the city will need to make further cuts to police and fire if it does not pass.

The City of Fresno is facing a $6 billion shortfall in the coming budget and Mayor Swearengin says Measure G will help with $4 billion of that.

Those who oppose Measure G say it will not solve Fresno's budget problems. Mayor Swearengin says they have not offered any suggestions that would solve the problem other than raising taxes on Fresno residents. "Why wouldn't we do something that actually saves people money, which Measure G does, before we go asking people for more money?" said Mayor Swearengin.

Opponents of Measure G will be on CBS47 News at 5:00 p.m. on Friday, May 31st.

Voting on Measure G takes place in the City of Fresno on June 4th.
