The City of Fresno will improve the safety at the site of a deadly accident on Shepherd Avenue near Millbrook.

On Thursday, the Fresno City Council approved plans for a pedestrian undercrossing at the spot where 7-year-old Donovan Maldonado was struck and killed by an alleged drunk driver.

Donovan was riding his bike with his family last summer and was hit in the crosswalk that crosses Shepherd, between Perrin and Millbrook.

City leaders say the new project will also cut down on traffic tie-ups and air pollution in the neighborhood.

"Reducing the amount of time those cars have to idle on the street that will improve our air quality that's helping to pay for this project," said Patrick Wiemiller with the City of Fresno.

The new undercrossing will be funded through a federal grant approved three years ago and the project could be finished by this fall.

Meanwhile, the suspect in the deadly accident in that area, Loren LeBeau, will go to trial in August.

The former Central High basketball coach is charged with DUI and leaving the scene of the accident.
