He plays the piano, owns a vineyard in Napa, and holds one of the highest architectural awards in the country.  Robert Duncan Nicol can do just about anything, except hear.

“You don't have to hear to do art.  You don't have to hear, actually, to do music either,” said Nicol.   The San Diego native was born deaf, but his parents made sure he had the same opportunities as children who could hear.  His gift will afford the same benefits for many others.

“In that spirit, Bob has pledged $2 million dollars to Fresno State,” said University President, John Welty.

The money will fund a program called The Silent Garden.  Experts will be brought in to teach students, parents and professionals.

“It's a wonderful opportunity for us,” said student Anthony Davis, who came to Fresno State from Michigan to study deaf education.

Gabrielle Rodriguez grew up in San Joaquin, where almost no one gave her a chance.

“But my mom, she was like, ‘If you want it, go for it.  Don’t let anybody stop you,’” said Rodriguez.

She wants to spread Nicol's important message to other deaf kids.

“I want to be an excellent role model for the children,” said Rodriguez.

For such an exceptional gift, Nicol has no ties to Fresno State other than a longstanding friendship with one of the program's professors, Dr. Paul Ogden.
