Students at Cooper Academy are turning pennies into hope for cancer patients.
The students raised $4,485 through their Pennies for Patients program.
The kids were inspired by teacher, Kazy Gutierrez, whose daughter, Emmy survived a childhood form of leukemia. "Emmy just likes to be a part of paying it forward and helping others that have gone through here situation. And so we thought why not start with where I work at," said Kazy.
The money raised was donated to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, a group that helps many Valley patients each year.
Allison Torres with the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society said, "Last year we helped a little under 200 patients and gave out almost $200,000 in financial aid, so we are doing a lot on the local level."
The money raised by the Cooper Academy kids is the second highest amount ever raised in the Fresno Unified School District for the fight against cancer.
