It's 6:30 Friday evening, CBS47 is riding along with police Sergeant Mike Smith in southeast Fresno when a call goes out of an attempted armed robbery near a store at Third and Ventura.
Radio Dispatcher: “Black Mercedes armed with a black handgun.”
We begin to scan neighborhood streets for two Hispanic men in a black Mercedes.
“It's really a crapshoot when you try to cross these guys,” said Sgt. Mike Smith of the Fresno Police Dept.
Then Sgt. Smith is called to a domestic disturbance not far away at 11th and Verrue where a man has made a threat with a gun.
As officers try to calm down the victims, officers notice a black Mercedes parked around the corner. Officers then shift their focus to the house near the car. The people out front are now suspects.
Officers detain them to find out who is who and what they're involvement may be.
The woman from the store tells officers that one of the men, 18-year old Isaac Chavez, is one who tried to rob her.
But the other guy who had the gun is missing. Police believe he's hiding inside the house.
“This is the Fresno police department. Anybody inside needs to exit now,” an officer announced over a patrol car loud speaker.
No one comes out, so officers move in with guns drawn. They find the house to be empty.
But there is a detached garage in the backyard, so officers later search that. Lo and behold they find their man hiding, he is 19-year old Raymond Torres.
Sergeant Smith says this is good overall police work.
“Had we not put the robbery and this location together and we walk away, they feel like they've gotten away with something and they get amped up and maybe the firearm gets used in a fight with a neighbor,” said Sgt. Smith.
Hours later, officers served a search warrant at that house, but they did not find the gun used in the attempted robbery.
