Lawmakers want prison realignment changes

Republican lawmakers want the state to fix what they call flaws in the governor's prison realignment plan.

Under realignment, lower level offenders are being sent to county jails rather than state prisons to reduce overcrowding at the prisons.

The plan is putting more of those low level criminals on the streets because the added inflow causes county jails to overflow.

Southern California Republican Assemblywoman Melissa Melendez said, "Realignment is causing very real problems that need very real solutions. We cannot allow our communities to constantly live in fear of criminals that are being released early onto the streets."

One of the bills announced on Tuesday would send sex offenders who violate parole back to prison, while another would increase penalties for those who disable their GPS tracking devices.
