Locals prepare for federal budget cuts

A delay or two is nothing new in modern day air travel but those delays could soon multiply as the FAA is forced to cut 600 million from its budget and reduce the shifts of some air traffic controllers. The cuts could hit CastleAirport in Atwater especially hard, possibly even forcing them to shut down their tower all together.

And those same budget cuts have John Niemann, the General Manager of Cargill Beef's Fresno facility, worried.

"It means we have a problem and we need to fix it," said Niemann.

Washington gridlock could cost Niemann the equivalent of 20 million quarter pound hamburgers that roll out Cargill Beef Fresno each week.

"All meet processing facilities in the United States have to have USDA meat inspection to operate if we do not have them we do not operate, it's a very simple answer," said Niemann.

If inspectors are put on furlough as part of the cuts Niemann would be forced to halt production and could potentially lose thousands in the process.
