Democratic Congressman Jim Costa called a press conference Friday to speak out against budget cuts he believes could harm the valley economy.

"This provides another hurdle to over come for middle class people. Job creation that is done by businesses both small and large are not going to be willing to invest to create more jobs," said Costa.

But Republican Congressman Devin Nunes says the effects of the cuts are over stated and that even more cuts are needed.

"These are very small cuts and they pale in comparison to what the government is going to have to do. So people just have to get ready," said Nunes.

People like John Niemann, the General Manager of Cargill Beef in Fresno. Niemann is worried possible USDA inspector furloughs could impact his operation that turns out the equivalent of 20 million quarter pound hamburgers a week.

“All meat processing facilities in the United States have to have USDA meat inspection to operate, if we do not have them we do not operate,” said Niemann.

Democrats and Republicans agree a compromise needs to be struck.

“Yes, there is no question that can we do these cuts better,” said Nunes.

But how exactly that compromise might happen, remains unknown.
