Health experts say flu season is moderately severe

As this year's flu season continues to take its toll, those who have been putting off are now flooding the waiting room for their chance at getting vaccinated.

"Hey I have to go today. It's already in Madera, and I don't want my kids to get sick," Jessica Franklin said.

A 61 year old woman in Madera County died from the flu Monday, and that got people rushing to the nearest clinic for a flu shot.

"They're constantly touching their faces, touching other things and each other," Diana Gutierrez, a concerned parent said.

The Public Health Department in Madera County had about 160 families come in just 2 hours, but health experts say just because you get the flu shot doesn't mean you're protected right away.

"It takes 10 days for your immunity to kick in," said Van Do-Reyoso, Public Health Director.

Which is why the Madera County Public Health Department says it's better to get vaccinated sooner rather than later.

"It cost $5 but we waive that if they can't afford it," Do-Reynoso said.
