In some parts of the Valley gunshots are an almost customary start to the New Year, but

New Years shots fired this year were deadly.

“Last night I heard the shots and I don't know what happened until the police was coming in,” said neighbor, Ruben Macias.

All that remains are markings and a murder scene washed clean.

Madera police got a call early Tuesday morning to a cul-de-sac at the end of Millview Drive.

There, they found 35-Year-Old Gerald Warren with multiple gunshot wounds.

“They said at the hospital he got shot 9 times,” said Warren’s uncle, Elvin Laurent.

Laurent says he believes an argument started at a night club in town. It ended up in front of a home where Warren and friends often hung out.

“They had a fist fight and another guy pulled out a gun and began shooting him and stood over him and shot him until the gun stopped shooting,” said Laurent.

Close friends are grieving the loss and have placed candles where the  shooting happened.

“It's a little tough when somebody's been shot before and they make it out you know, you expect that to happen again, but it always doesn’t happen,” said close friend, Carlist Harvin.

Warren's uncle says there was no reason for the violence and guns are not the answer.

“We need to stop killing each other and just start trying to understand that we all people living in this same town and killing each other ain't gonna make things no different for nobody,” said Laurent.

Police are still looking for the shooter.  Anyone with information is urged to call the Investigative Unit of the Madera Police Department at (559) 675-4200.
