Getting ready for more rain

City crews were busy cleaning up after the first storm hit the Valley but homeowners need to do their part to get ready for the next round.

City maintenance workers spent much of Wednesday clearing streets and storm drains to prevent flooding.

PG&E was also hard at work making repairs caused by the storm.

Denny Boyles with PG&E says it's always good to stay prepared in case a power outage occurs. "Keeping a flashlight with good batteries on hand is a good idea. If you're like me and you don't have a home phone anymore, keep your cell phone charged so you are able to call out."

Keeping frozen water bottles in your freezer can help get you through a power outage too. Move the frozen jugs to your refrigerator to keep food cold and you will also have water to drink when they thaw.

City maintenance crews are hard at work, clearing leaves from gutters and storm drains to prevent flooding, but they are asking people to help out too. Brian Russell with Fresno City Works said, "During this time of year when the leaves are falling off the trees, the amount of leaf debris in gutter becomes too large to sweep as we normally would."

Clearing the leaves during a rain storm is so important, it takes an entire crew to gather up all the leaves. "We have an 11 person crew that maintains all the street sweeping end of the operations and then there's dozens others doing storm drains, pot holes and other sorts of things."

But everyone needs to do their part as well. "Make sure the gutter in front of your home is clean. You'd be surprised how much trouble a plastic bag or empty milk jug can cause," said Russell.

For those who live in Fresno, if at anytime you have a flood issue in your neighborhood, you can always call 621 CITY to get it taken care of.
