Fresno Police Chief Jerry Dyer pulls back a curtain mapping out the floor plan of Valley Protein on Wednesday.  He points to the path Lawrence Jones took that fateful Tuesday morning, November 6th, when police say he shot and killed two employees, injured two others, then turned the gun on himself.

Dyer says Jones got the gun, a stolen four-shot Deringer, out of his locker.  His first victim, Salvador Diaz, was in the “griding room.”   He then went into the “deboning room.”  Before fatally shooting Manuel Verdin, Jones called out to another employee.

“He had the gun in his hand, had somewhat of a blank stare on his face prior to the shootings and during the shootings,” said Dyer.

Police know Jones was a convicted criminal who was diagnosed with explosive disorder.  They learned even more about him after searching his apartment.  There were 23 handwritten letters.

“The letters were addressed to women that he had never officially met but had either seen on the streets, riding their bicycles or walking, or TV personalities,” said Dyer.

Even after two weeks of searching for clues, police still don't have a clear motive.

Meanwhile, dozens of workers are back on the job, including the woman who was shot in the bottom.

“Everybody was glad to see her there.  Having gone through it, everybody said, ‘Wow, if she can do it, we can do it,’” said Bob Coyle, owner of Valley Protein.

Although many who worked with Jones thought he was a decent man, police say his family knew a darker side.

“Those who truly knew Lawrence Jones said that they were not at all surprised by this act of violence that was committed by him,” said Dyer.

The man who was shot in the neck is still recovering in the hospital.  Dyer that aside from interviewing him, the investigation is complete.  He noted the victim may still be alive because a responding officer plugged the bullet hole with his finger.
