Police Shoot Suspect After Car Chase

A suspect is shot by Selma police after he opened fire on the officers.

It started around 6:30 in the evening after the suspect led police on a car chase through a neighborhood where children were playing outside.

Police say a felon with an extensive criminal record jumped out of the moving car, ran into someone’s backyard and fired at police.

Officers returned fire as the driver of the stolen car sped off.

"When it passed us and the cop almost hit us and came back around, there was somebody trying to get out the passenger side door. The door was open leg was hanging out trying to get out,” said Lori Garcia.

"The suspect ran down an alley into backyard. as officer followed him into the backyard. he fired upon officer, officer returned fire striking suspect,” said Police Chief Myron Dyck.

The suspect was driven to a Fresno hospital.

The officer was not injured.

FresnoCounty’s homicide unit is investigating.
