The search is on for a thief who stole a car with a 5-year-old boy inside.

The car was taken from the parking lot of a Selma business near Whitson and Floral around 3:15 p.m. Wednesday afternoon.

The 5-year-old and his 10-year-old brother were in the backseat of the car when the thief got inside.

The older boy jumped out of the car and ran to get his mother who ran out and saw her car driving away.

Police were called and located the car and the child an hour later on Leonard near Manning, two and a half miles away. The little boy was still in the back seat and was strapped into a car seat. He was upset but was not injured.

Police remind everyone that it is not safe to get out of the car with the engine running for any length of time and don't leave children unattended in the car.

The car has tinted windows so police believe the thief didn't know the child was inside until he was already driving away.

The suspect is described as a man in his 20s, with a fair complexion and clean shaven. He was wearing a red ball cap.

The suspect is wanted for car theft but could also face kidnapping charges.

Anyone with information about the suspect is asked to call the Selma Police Department.
