During a ceremony at the California Air National Guard base in Fresno, close to 100 airmen with the 144th Fighter Wing received a hometown heroes salute.  They were recognized for their work during recent deployments around the world.

The servicemen and their families heard words of appreciation from the leader of their unit, Colonel Sam Said.

“I am proud of every single one of you, I’m proud to be your commander.  Well done,” said Col. Sam Said of the 144th Fighter Wing.

Congressman Jim Costa was on hand as well.

“We will always be grateful for your service to the united states of America and to the risk of your lives and the fight on this global war on terror,” said Rep. Jim Costa.

Each person had their name called and were given an award.

“It's a little bittersweet because the rest of my team is still over there actually in Afghanistan, so it's good to be able to take the award for everyone,” said James Fisk of the 144th Fighter Wing.

Not forgotten was 23-year old Daniel Bravo.  He was a member of the air force who was killed in a motorcycle crash in Fresno County this past summer.

“It means a lot to us as a family and to our son.  He had a lot of friends and all these people here meant a lot to him.  They were his family,” said Theresa Bravo, Daniel’s mother.

Fresno mayor Ashley Swearengin served as keynote speaker.

“Thank you for what you've done, thank you for what you're willing to do and what you continue to do,” said Ashley Swearengin, Mayor of Fresno.

Realizing it may be a bumpy road ahead as these folks try to get settled in; the mayor extended a helping hand.

“Don't be afraid to call or contact the colonel to reach out and we will make every way possible for you in our community to be successful as you transition back home,” said Swearengin.
