One woman was murdered, another was stabbed and a police officer was also wounded when he responded to a 911 call early Monday morning near Fresno City College.

At a new conference, Fresno Police Chief Jerry Dyer said, "At about 5 o'clock this morning, we received multiple calls into our dispatch center from a frantic female - stated that she'd been stabbed, and that her roommate was also stabbed and was dying."

That roommate, a 46-year-old woman, died at the scene.

The frantic 20-year-old who called police is recovering from her stab wound at Community Regional Medical Center.

The first Fresno Police officer to arrive on the scene, confronted the armed suspect in a nearby alley. That officer was stabbed in the back of the head. "Our officer is at CRMC. He's being treated, and is in stable condition at this time," said Chief Dyer.

The 26-year-old suspect, now in custody, lives in this neighborhood, and may have known the women he's accused of stabbing. "It appears he lives nearby, so there's a good indication he's acquainted. We'll shore that up later," said Dyer.

A neighbor CBS47 spoke to says everyone is familiar with the woman who was killed because the police have been called out to her apartment many times.

During the new conference, Chief Dyer was asked if the suspect might be one of the inmates released early from the country jail because of overcrowding. "The initial information is that he's on post-release community supervision," said Chief Dyer.

Police have not released the names of the suspect, victims or the wounded officer.
