Fresno homicides are up 50% from this time last year

Crime tape and police cars, it's become a common scene in Fresno.

" Shootings are up and generally when shootings are up homicides are up," Police Chief Jerry Dyer said. 

Fresno's murder rate has gone up 50% compared to this time last year, it's a sobering statistic that has many looking for solutiions.

The most recent murder took place Friday when a 21 year old was shot to death. Two days before that a 15 year old also died of gunshot wounds.

" The community should be able to provide alternatives for kids, then to take to the streets and involve in crime," said Clint Olivier. 

It's a violent act that many folks say doens't surprise them.

" Considering the times, no it doesn't shock me," Don Weldon said. 

" We have to focus on the good. We can't focus on that part, it will depress us all," Victoria Sumler said. 

Police Chief Jerry Dyer says law enforcement is taking significant steps to address the violent crime increase.

Detectives and traffic officers are out on patrol dressed in uniform, targeting gang hot spots, but Dyer says the problem is much bigger.

" We have early release from the jail, down sizing with prison population and reduced law enforcement resources," said Dyer.
