Beating the heat in the Valley

Newlyweds watch their pool take shape.

Come Friday, they hope to be splashing around in it.

“We need to be in it to cool down… this heat is going to be crazy,” Emmy Densmore said.

Friday will be one of the hottest days of the year.

Luckily, Emmy and Ben Densmore are planners.

“It’s been hard work trying to plan everything… designing,” the couple said.

They expect a higher water bill, but will take help wherever they can get it. That’s where PG&E comes in.

“If you're going to be away from home for more than 3 hours, it's ok to turn off your air conditioning. If away for less-have programmable thermostat, said PG&E spokesman Jeff Smith.

Firefighters working in the sweltering heat would do just about anything to get near an air conditioner.

No such luck.

Even after two decades fighting California’s fiercest fires, Ken Yasunaga has had a close call with the heat.

“I got dizzy. Got so hot where things where kind of spinning and disoriented and staggering around a little bit until I could catch my balance. Sit down for a little bit,” he said.

He hydrates all day.

“Each person goes through 4 to 5…16 ounce bottles water on a fire,” he said.

Over time, Yasunaga has learned to pace himself. Like an athlete.

And the newlyweds have a plan for that too.

“Drink lots of water. Even if you're in the pool. Easy to underestimate the effect the sun has on you,” Ben Densmore said.
