A man drowned when he and friends went swimming in the San Joaquin River near Skaggs Bridge & Highway 145 on Monday.

The three men had been working out along the river Monday morning and decided to go into the river to cool off around 10:30 a.m.

One of the men, a 25-year-old Hispanic man, who is not a strong swimmer, got pulled under by the strong currents.

The friends tried multiple times to rescue the man before finally getting him out of the water.

Mike Mollica with the Fresno City Fire Department said, "...went back in, found him, drug him out of the water and the two friends and one of the workers here at Skaggs Bridge Park, a Fresno County worker, started CPR on him."

The man was still unconscious when he was taken away by ambulance and was pronounced dead at Community Regional Medical Center.

It was the second search and rescue on the San Joaquin River in less than 24 hours.

20-year-old swimmer Nick Gilbert went under while trying to swim to an island Sunday afternoon around 5:30 p.m.

That drowning happened in the area behind Santa Fe and Bluff Avenue, about 5 miles up river from where Monday's incident happened.

The search is ongoing but Gilbert had not been found by Monday at noon.

The Fresno County Sheriff's Department is reminding everyone to pay attention to the warning signs posted in the area, advising swimmers of the dangers of swimming in the river because of submerged rocks, deep water, cold temperatures and swift currents.
