The Lindsay's say their nephew and his elderly mother heard gunshots, so they went to see what was going on.
"And when he opened the door, the man was apparently at the gate and shot him to death," said Leroy Lindsay, his nephew Vernon Lindsay, 60 was the man that was shot and killed. His mother who is in her late 80's, was not hurt.
The gunman, 40-year-old Christopher Machado also killed his own mother, 73-year-old Edith Machado.
"I heard four gunshots...and I hear a bunch of commotion and yelling and then I hear four more gunshots go off," said Jessi Galiher, who lives down the street.
Police say the gnman also went to our lady of perpetual help, a catholic church just a block away and banged on the door of the nunnery where no one answered, but he did get into the church.
"Apparently fired at the crucifix missed and hit the wall," said Janet Stoll-Lee, a Spokesperson with the Clovis Police Department.
Police say when they arrived on scene, the suspect had a shotgun and was behaving erratically. Machado was shot by officers and later died at CRMC.
The Lindsay's are worried for the victim's elderly mother.
"She just lost it. and she's not very good right now she has a heart condition and I'm afraid for her," said Louise Lindsay, the woman's sister.
Police are still trying to figure out what led to all the violence, neighbors tell CBS47 they suspect the gunman suffered from mental illness.
