Current and former students are speaking out after the arrest of a teacher at Fresno's Hoover High School.
Megan Denman, 29, is out of jail. She was arrested on Monday on charges she allegedly had sexual contact with an underage male student.
"I kinda don't believe it 'cause she doesn't seem like that," said a current student, who did not want to be identified.
Students at Hoover High School tell CBS47 that rumors have been swirling around campus ever since Denman's arrest.
Police accuse the social sciences teacher of having sexual contact with an underage student at her home several times between the summer and fall of last year.
A current student, who did not want to be identified, says she heard this week about the alleged crimes during her first period class.
"And they were just like 'Oh, I guess she had sex with some students' and something like that. And everyone's all shocked. And there's a lot of rumors saying like 'Whoa, that's crazy," the girl said.
Police started looking into the allegations late last week. At this point, they do not have any reason to believe there are any more victims. If there are, police urge them to come forward.
The department typically investigates a couple sex-related cases each year that involve teachers or those in similar positions of trust, Sgt. Nina Jacobs said. She works with the Fresno Police Department’s sexual assault unit.
"I think as a parent, it's always wise to monitor who your kids are associating with and what they're doing with their time. And talking with your kids. I think that's the best prevention,” Jacobs said.
Police announced Denman’s arrest on the same day that a former Modesto teacher appeared in court on sexual abuse charges against a teenage student.
State lawmakers have introduced several bills that, if passed, would change how teacher misconduct cases are handled.
In a statement, Fresno Unified administrators said they acted quickly to remove Denman from her classroom while the allegations against her are investigated. She’s now on paid administrative leave, a district spokeswoman said.
"She was a good teacher. Just like really laid back," said a former student, who did not want to be identified.
