Parents, students and bus drivers are terribly upset after school board members with Merced Unified High School District need to make some budget cuts.

Sabrina Ford works as a secretary for transportation and has been with the district for 30 years, she's hoping to keep her job but knows many colleagues will be out of work.

"Devastated, not for me but for the drivers, because they know they're gone, that's 19 families that are out of a job," said Ford.

Merced Unified High School District held a meeting Wednesday night to discuss budget cuts. All but one member voted to pass transportation cuts. Which means 19 transportation positions could be cut and students who live outside the five mile walking distance radius will either have to walk to school, find a ride, or pay 300 dollars for the year to ride the city bus.

Reporter: "so you don't know how you're going to get to school?"

Student: (crying) "I really don't know"

Superintendent Scott Scambray says he feels for those affected but because the state is in such a budget crises cuts need to be made. These cuts would save the district more than 2-million dollars.

"The state has backed us into a corner. We're not fully funded for transportation right now and its going down to zero the year after next," said Scambray.

The school board will meet again on this issues in April.
