The death toll has risen from a fiery collision in northern California. A charter bus carrying high school students and a freight truck hit head-on, killing many students on board.
The California Highway Patrol says the driver of the fed-ex truck and the charter bus are among the deceased. In addition, three adult chaperone and five teenagers were killed.
Authorities say the truck and the bus were driving on opposite sides of Interstate 5 when the truck crossed over the median and hit the bus head on. Authorities say flames broke out in the front end of the bus immediately.
The students were on their way to Humboldt State University for a college spring preview. Two other buses made it to the campus safely. According to the CHP, 44 students were on board from Los Angeles Unified, Riverside Unified and Long Beach Unified.
