Thursday evening provided a sight you don’t see every day, an armored truck lying on its side.
With precious cargo on board, Garda employees rushed to transfer bags of cash out of the wrecked truck and into one that was operable.
Exactly what went wrong remains somewhat of a mystery. The driver told police he tapped the brakes and then the truck suddenly went out of control. It pulled to the right, hit a guardrail and then flipped.
The armed guard who was riding in the back at the time was seat belted in, which allowed him to escape with only cuts and some head and neck pain.
The wreck created a traffic mess for about two hours. Eastbound Herndon was reduced to one lane. Meanwhile, westbound travelers were sent on a detour down Milburn Avenue.
Neighbors came out of their homes to get a glimpse of all the commotion.
“We’re definitely relieved because we live right here and we’re glad no one was hurt,” said Xandria Rios.
Xandria Rios’ son Frankie watched some video we shot of a tow truck lifting the armored vehicle up, which in the eyes of a 4-year old is pretty darn awesome.
“It flipped over with a backflip and it splashed like in a pool and it explode,” said Frankie.
The company is now examining the truck to try and determine if there was a mechanical problem that caused the crash.
