The Fresno County Sheriff's Office has identified Robert James Vancamp, 23, as the suspect who died in Thursday's officer-involved shooting in Fresno County north of Clovis.

Sheriff's deputies say around 2:30 a.m. they responded to a home on the 8300 block of N. Sunnyside Avenue for reports of an armed man threatening to hurt himself, family members, and threatening "suicide by cop."

Deputies say, when they arrived, Vancamp was moving in and out of the home and was still armed.

"He turned toward deputies with a handgun, deputies fired several rounds, striking him more than once," says Deputy Chris Curtice, public information officer for the Fresno County Sheriff's Office.

Vancamp fell to the ground, and deputies performed CPR until emergency medical personnel arrived, but he died on scene.

Deputies say they've been in contact with Vancamp before.

"We've been at the residence over the past three years. I think there's been 28 calls for service at this residence," Curtice says.

Deputies say the most recent contact was the previous night for a disturbance call.

Friends who didn't want to speak on camera describe Vancamp as a good person who had trouble with mental health issues and who needed help.

They also say he was a Buchannan High School graduate who had a fiancée and a young son.

Although an officer-involved shooting is surprising to some neighbors in this otherwise quiet area, neighbors say, mental health issues cross all socio-economic boundaries.

"This is a very, very upscale area--very safe. We're not any more or less exempt than anybody in any geographical area of this town," says Dan Tesche, who lives nearby.

The case is under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to call the Fresno County Sheriff's Office.
