Windows XP Support Expiring

The end is near if you are using Windows XP on your computer.  April 8th is the final day Microsoft will offer security updates and technical support for XP.

The popular operating system has been around since 2001, but due to technological advances it has become outdated.

"The first thing to remember is planes are not going to fall out of the sky and the earth is not going to open up and swallow us when XP expires," said Jay Petersen of The Geeks Computer Service in Clovis.

Jay Petersen says XP will still work.  However, once you connect to the internet your computer becomes a target.

"You're going to be vulnerable to viruses, worms and other malicious threats," said Petersen.

After 13 years of support, Microsoft will stop patching security flaws that pop-up in XP.  The program has had a solid run, but it's now simply too old to be considered practical for everday use.  A lot of new software and components are not compatible with it.  So Petersen recommends PC users switch to Windows 8.1, but warns you to be prepared.

"It's going to be perfectly normal if you're frustrated by the new layout because it is so different," said Petersen.

Right now is a great time to do that upgrade because if you turn in your old laptop with XP on it, Best Buy is going to give you $100 toward a brand new computer.  The deal is on from now through April 19th.  Your laptop just needs to meet a few simple guidelines.

"It does need to be functional.  No cracked screens, the battery has to be able to charge up and other than that we're all set," said Richard Darling, G.M. of Best Buy in Clovis.

The $100 is issued in the form of Best Buy store credit, which you have one month to use on a laptop or desktop computer.

"We'll do a free walk-out working for you so you're familiar with Windows 8 and you can go home with confidence knowing how to use it," said Darling.
